Do you charge for consultations or estimates?

Your consultation and estimate are free. Tell us what’s happening with your property and what you’d like to improve. We’ll walk the space, review access and site conditions, talk through practical options and explain the next step.In most cases, one visit gives us everything we need to prepare your proposal. If your project requires specialized design, engineering or additional planning, we’ll discuss that with you up front.

What size projects do you accept?

We focus on residential landscaping and small excavation projects that are a good match for our crew, equipment, access requirements, and schedule.

Do you provide above-ground pool leveling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We prepare and level the designated area according to the project requirements provided by the homeowner or pool installer. Final pool assembly and manufacturer compliance remain the responsibility of the pool installer or homeowner unless specifically included in the contract.

Can your equipment fit through my gate?

Accepted Answer

Yes—in many cases. Our compact Bobcat MT85 mini track loader can access many residential backyards through openings as narrow as 36 inches. During your consultation, we'll verify gate width, turning clearance, slopes, overhead obstructions, and overall site access to ensure our equipment is a good fit for your property.

Will the equipment damage my lawn?

Accepted Answer

Some soil disturbance is unavoidable when using compact equipment. While our tracked equipment helps minimize ground pressure compared to larger machines, ruts and disturbed turf can still occur depending on soil conditions, moisture, and the scope of work. As part of most projects, we fill any ruts with topsoil and reseed disturbed lawn areas to help restore the work area.  Extensive lawn restoration, sod replacement, irrigation repairs, or repairs outside the defined work area will be specifically included in the proposal.

How much does a small landscaping or excavation project cost?

Accepted Answer

Project pricing depends on the scope of work, equipment access, soil conditions, material quantities, hauling and disposal needs, and the amount of finish work required. After reviewing your property and project goals, we provide a written proposal outlining the work included.

How far in advance should I schedule my project?

Do you deliver mulch, dirt, and rock?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Depending on the project, we may provide delivery only, delivery with placement, or complete spreading and installation.We offer:Delivery onlyMaterial delivered to an accessible location.​Delivery and bulk placementMaterial transported into the work area and placed in designated locations.​Full spreading and finish installationMaterial placed, spread, graded, and finished as described in the proposal.

Do you haul away removed landscaping materials?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can remove and haul away materials such as old shrubs, landscape rock, mulch, edging, pavers, small sheds, and other landscape debris when disposal is included in your proposal. Hauling requirements, disposal fees, and any limitations will be reviewed before work begins so the project scope is clear.

Do you remove trees and shrubs?

Accepted Answer

Our services focus on small ornamental trees and shrubs that can be safely accessed and removed with compact equipment. Large tree removal, hazardous trees, overhead cutting, and stump grinding may require a qualified tree-service contractor.

Question 11

Do you install French drains and other residential drainage solutions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We install select residential drainage solutions, including French drains, when site conditions allow water to be collected and discharged safely and effectively.The right solution depends on several factors, including the property’s grade, soil conditions, runoff patterns, available discharge locations, neighboring properties, and local regulations. Because every site is different, a French drain is not appropriate for every water problem. Some projects may also require utility locating, permitting, engineering, or coordination with other contractors.Drainage improvements are designed to reduce or redirect water based on the property’s existing conditions. However, weather, groundwater, neighboring properties, and changing site conditions can affect performance, so the complete elimination of standing water cannot be guaranteed.

Can you remove an old shed, deck, or patio?

We evaluate small demolition projects individually. Access, material type, connection to the home, disposal requirements, utilities, and structural conditions affect whether the work is a good fit.

Do I need to call 811?

Accepted Answer

No—we'll take care of that for you. Before excavation begins, 46 North will contact North Dakota One Call (811) to have public utilities located and marked within the work area.Utility locating is required before excavation. Hole size, depth, soil conditions, access, and structural requirements are reviewed before work begins.Please note that 811 does not locate privately installed utilities, such as irrigation systems, invisible dog fences, private electrical lines, landscape lighting, septic components, or privately installed drainage systems. It is the homeowner's responsibility to identify or arrange locating for any private utilities before work begins if their locations are unknown.

Question 14

Do landscaping or excavation projects require permits?

Accepted Answer

Some projects may require permits, utility locating, engineering, inspections, or approval from a city, township, homeowners association, or other authority. Requirements vary by location and project type. We will discuss known requirements during planning, but the responsible party should be identified in the project proposal.

Question 15

What happens if you find buried concrete, roots, debris, or other unexpected conditions?

Accepted Answer

Hidden site conditions may not be visible before excavation begins. If we uncover buried concrete, large roots, unsuitable soil, construction debris, private utilities, or other unexpected materials, we will pause as needed, explain the issue, and discuss any change in scope or cost before proceeding.

Do you provide computer-generated landscape designs?

Accepted Answer

No. We previously offered detailed computer-generated landscape plans, but most homeowners preferred to invest those design hours directly into the project itself. Instead, we use on-site consultation, measurements, material selections, and practical layout planning to develop a clear approach for your landscaping project.

Do you offer lawn mowing services?

Accepted Answer

46 North does not provide routine lawn mowing or weekly lawn maintenance services. We focus on residential landscaping, grading, drainage, planting, material placement, landscape removal, and small excavation projects. We also provide paver patios, European greenhouses, pergolas, pavilions, and sunrooms.
